Sitting in the distance, among the lush green landscape of Tuscany, is the town of Pienza.
Pienza was actually rebuilt from another town called Corsignano. When Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, later to become Pope Pius II, became Pope, he decided to have the town rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. He wanted it as a retreat from Rome, and this was the first town to become a retreat away from the city, an idea that was then adopted in other Italian and European centres. The construction started on the new town in 1459 and Pope Pius II consecrated the Duomo on August 29, 1462.
In 1996, the town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning it is protected by the International World Heritage Program as a site that...
... needs to be protected for the heritage of humanity.
The town is located in the lush green hills and valleys of Tuscany, specifically in the Siena province, which is known for its beautiful scenery, wine and agriculture.
