Sand dunes make up a good portion of the area of Umpqua Lighthouse State Park along the Oregon Coast near the Umpqua River mouth where the lighthouse sits in the backdrop. Sanddunes tower over the landscape with some that can reach heights of at least 500 feet or more and are protected by the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area.
The lighthouse was erected at the north spit of the Umpqua River back in 1857 but was lost to the powerful waters of the Oregon Coast in the USA. It only took six years for the lighthouse to be demolished as the foundation was all laid upon the sanddunes that surround the region.
In 1888, this lighthouse was built at the mouth of the Umpqua River and first became operational in 1894. Learning from their first mistakes, workers built this lighthouse on a high ridge which stood above the sand dunes and the ocean where frequent storms were known to hit along the Oregon Coast.
Today, people can tour to the lighthouse located in Umpqua Lighthouse State Park in Oregon, USA and capture the beautiful scenery of the Oregon Coast. The long stretches of sanddunes are fascinating natural creations to see and for those who love the wildness of the outdoors, they are perfect for off roading.
