The Saamis Teepee is a roadside attraction located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. It is the largest teepee in the world and was originally built for the 1988 Winter Olympics that was held in Calgary Alberta. It was awarded pride of place over the Olympic Cauldron at the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, and only after the games was it moved to the city of Medicine Hat.
The teepee is now located just south of the the Trans-Canada Highway and looks over the Blackfoot First Nations Buffalo jump. If the teepee was put up against a building, it would measure over twenty stories high and has been...
... standing proud in the same spot since 1991. It was damaged a little during a windstorm in January 2007, but turned out that because the structure was so weathered from being outside for so long, it has made it weaker, and therefore more suspectible to damage. Due to the repairs that needed to be made, the teepee is now 15 feet shorter than it's 'original' version.
Medicine Hat is a town in Albera of about 60,000 people. It is located right on the Trans-Canada Highway, and so is passed through a lot by travellers making their way across the country.
