The Romanesque church of Sant Miquel, a 12th century parish church, can be found in the Place de Gleisa, the Town Square of Vielha, the capital of the Vall d'Aran, in Catalonia, Spain. In Spanish the church would be called Iglesia de San Miguel, but Sant Miquel is the Catalonian version.
The bell tower of Sant Miquel is an octagonal design and was added in the 14th century. The simple beauty of the church is a great asset to the Town Square of Vielha and a landmark throughout the area. Visitors to Vielha are not likely to miss seeing Sant Miquel because the tourist office is also in the Town Square.
Onside the church of Sant Miquel one will find the Gothic altar from the 15th century, and the 12th century wood-carved figure of Christ, an awe-inspiring sight. Partially damaged, the 'Cristo de Mig Aran' is enclosed in glass, but still gives the viewer a feeling of serenity and mercy.
The town of Vielha in Catalonia, Spain has a population of around 5000 and dates back to Roman times. Surrounded by mountains the lively little community welcomes skiers in the winter and hikers and walkers the rest of the year.
