The Rock of Gibraltar is located on the southern tip of Spain, and is one of fourteen British Overseas Territories, but is the only one in Europe.
Since the approval of the Gibraltar Constitution Order of 2006 the territory has its own Parliament, with fifteen elected members and two appointed members. The Governor of Gibraltar is Queen Elizabeth's representative, and there has been a Governor since 1704.

The Algeciras Bay was populated by the Moors and the Spanish and consists of the little towns of Algeciras (which was once a Roman settlement known as Portus Alba, meaning White Port), San Roque, La Linea de la Concepcion and Los Barrios. The eastern side of the bay belongs to the Gibraltar territory and was thought to be settled by the Phoenicians. The historic Rock of Gibraltar and the bay are among the oldest inhabited regions of the Mediterranean, with the Bay of Algeciras known as a busy shipping harbour for 3,000 years.
The famous Barbary Macaques only number about 230 these days, but they have been residents of the Rock from, at least, the 15th century and possibly much earlier. The eastern access to the bay is marked by the Europa Point lighthouse at the most southern spot of Gibraltar, from here the view across the Strait of Gibraltar to North Africa (14.24 kilometres) is excellent on a clear day. The Punta Carnero is the lighthouse to the west of Algeciras Bay. Tourists to this interesting historic spot come for the scuba diving to glimpse the many shipwrecks and historical relics or to watch the different species of dolphins and migrating whales.
