A pair of seagulls stand by to watch a motorcyclist cruise along the shores of Ripiro Beach as the Tasman Sea surges along the coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
Ripiro Beach is situated on the Pouto Peninsula which forms the northern entrance of the Kaipara Harbour - one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Ripiro Beach which faces the Tasman Sea, stretches from Maunganui Bluff to the North head of the Pouto Peninsula a distance of over 100 kilometres. This beach highway (which is drivable) is framed by cliffs of lignite and soft sand dunes.
A number of bird species call Ripiro Beach home including Black-Backed Gulls, Red-Billed Gulls and South Island Pied Oystercatchers. Although there was no sign of...
... any Oystercatchers on this particular day, it is believed that the sea gulls which are generally opportunist feeders allow the Oystercatchers to do the catching and then clean up any scraps. The birds both feed on Toheroa - a shellfish which is usually found in abundance at Ripiro Beach.
