share to Facebook The commission to build the Rialto Bridge was won by Antonio da Ponte. The bridge was constructed between 1588 and 1591 and until the wooden Accademia Bridge was constructed in 1854 the Rialto was the only link to the two sides of the Grand Canal by foot.

The external balustraded footpath of the Rialto Bridge provides a great view of the constant activity on the Grand Canal, while the central thoroughfare is lined with rows of shops and usually frantic with tourists.

The Rialto Bridge is a landmark in Venice and marks the centre of the city.
