The Duomo of Pienza in the Province of Siena, Italy is one of the earliest of the Renaissance style on the outside, however, the interior has a Gothic appearance. The cathedral is the work of Rossellino, as are most of the buildings of Pienza, although the influence of his mentor Leon Battista Alberti (1409-64) can be detected in this magnificent structure.
The triple-nave design makes the side 'naves' or aisles almost as high as the main nave. The five Sienese altar paintings, although simple, were created in 1461 specifically for the Duomo. The Duomo of Pienza is one of the dominant buildings on the Piazza Pio II.
