Depicted on many important national items, the red maple leaf symbol appears on the Canadian flag, the coat of arms, and the distinctive outline of the maple leaf is found on the country's penny.

The maple left was first adopted as an emblem of Canada in the 18th century and used for a number of applications such as on coins, in song, and on various articles of regimental clothing. In 1965 a stylized form of the red maple leaf officially became the national Canadian symbol with the presentation of the Canadian flag.
