While massive icebergs, free of the inhibiting pack ice which binds them during the winter, float freely in the ocean near the entrance to the harbour of Quirpon, the harbour itself was blocked with pack ice. The only iceberg watching available from Quirpon was from the opposite side of the harbour entrance which afforded a view of both the icebergs and pack ice.
Late pack ice of course causes problems for the fishermen of the coastal communities of Newfoundland who cannot leave the harbour to set crab pots and shrimp nets - from which they make a living. The town of Quirpon is situated along the Viking Trail near the top of the Great Northern Peninsula.
Man and woman iceberg watching from the shore in the town of Quirpon with pack ice in the harbour, Trails to the Vikings, Viking Trail, Great Northern Peninsula, Northern Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada. Model Released.
