The Puente de Isabel II, is a bridge that spans across the Rio (river) Guadalquivir in the city of Seville, in Andalusia Spain. When dusk sets on the city the bridge is lit up with many lights so that people can not only see when they are crossing it, but also so that people from far away can admire the architecture and design of the bridge itself.
This bridge was built between 1845 and 1852 by Ferdinand Bennetot and Gustavo Steinacher and due to the high quality and standard that it was built with, it is still in use and functioning today. This is a road bridge so hundreds of cars cross back...
... and forth over it every day, but you can also walk across it - you just have to make sure you stay over to the side. When this bridge was built it replaced one in this location that had been in use since 1171. The bridge was restored in 1960 to help reinforce the structures that were already in place and had been in use for over 100 years.
This style of bridge is an arch bridge, which means that it has supports at either side and a number of curved arches going across. Arch bridges are so strong because they work by transferring the weight across all parts of the bridge - part of the reason that they last so long and are so sturdy.
