The Big Muddy Badlands are named as such because they can be found bordering the Big Muddy Creek in the Big Muddy Valley - set into the prairie landscape of Southern Saskatchewan. They are actually a group of badlands that are found together and are more like an area of erosion and sandstone.
Badlands are an area of arid soil where you will often find sedimentary rocks and soil that is rich in clay. They often contain crevices and gorges and are hard to walk around on foot. The Big Muddy Badlands do play a small part in history as in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the Badlands formed part of the Outlaw trail, which was a trail used by famous outlaws such as Sam Kelly and Dutch Henry. The trail stretched all the way from Canada to Mexico and this area was just part of it.
Today this area isn't very populated and is used mostly for farming and tourism, such as ranches where people can ride horses. Due to the arid nature of the soil here farming it can still be a difficult task here.
