In the early 18th century, the National Museum of Prague in the Czech Republic was a scientific institution intended to systematically establish, prepare and publicly exhibit natural scientific and historical collections. The National Museum was founded through the efforts of many specific figures in Bohemia and many photos and construction plans were taken and gone over before the final stages were completed.
To this day, the National Museum in Prague is the oldest in Bohemia and the most reputable and largest museum in the Czech Republic. Throughout the museum you will find significant collections covering mineralogy, palaeontology, numismatics as well as a library and archives.
In 1949, the national government took over the museum and spelled out its role and leadership in the Museum and Galleries Act of 1959. In 1964, the National Museum in Prague was turned into an organization of five professionally self-governing components.
