The Church of Our Lady before Tyn is one of the most beautiful churches in Prague in the Czech Republic, and also one of the largest. The twin towers, with their many steeples, dominates the Old Town Square.
Construction of this Gothic church in Prague was begun in 1365 and completed in the 1380s. The Church of Our Lady before Tyn was the base for the Protestant Hussites in the 14th century, however, when the Roman Catholics became powerful the Hussite statues, tower bells and insignia were removed from the church.
In the 13th century the 'Tyn' was a fence used to border the marketplace centre. The entrance to the Church of Our Lady before Tyn depicts scenes of Christ's Passion. The tomb of Tycho Brahe lies behind the main pulpit. Brahe, who died in 1601, was a famous Danish astronomer who served in the court of Emperor Rudolf II of Austria.
The church also has a magnificent pipe organ and is the site of concerts. At night the front of the Church of Our Lady before Tyn in Prague in the Czech Republic is floodlit and the light extends all through the Old Town Square.
