A cute red and green shack in the midst of the forest in Egmont National Park in Taranaki, New Zealand is known as the Power Station. This building is where the power is provided to keep the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre and the area around the Falls supplied with electricity. It has a direct current output that is used to keep the light, heat and cooking appliances going at the Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge in Taranki, New Zealand.
The generator inside of the Power Station is run by the water from surrounding waterways of the Kapuni River and was first relocated to this shack in 1934. It is one of the few fully operational generating places left in the New Zealand area.
The building of the power station is set into a concrete slab with a grooved iron gabled roof. The base wall is made of concrete with the rest made of wood covered with a coat of bevel back weather boards. The entire building is approximately sixteen feet by seven feet and a short jaunt to the Dawson Falls Lodge.
Considering how long this power station has been servicing the Dawson Falls Lodge in Taranaki, New Zealand, it should be a well known landmark but in reality it is only recognized by a handful of people. There is hope that the power station is still running years from now and it will be known as the oldest operating power station in the world.
