In this picture of a flowering Pohutukawa Tree, you can see how a cluster starts out as small white buds that slowly begin to show their red tips. Once the red takes over the whiteness of the flowers, they continue to bloom until they are a stunning display of red that are made up of a mass of stamens.
This tree is native to the New Zealand region and many people know it as the "New Zealand Christmas Tree". Growing mainly along the coastal regions of the North Island, it also seems to do good in cultivation. The Pohutukawa Tree is fairly easy to grow and has now been seen flowering in areas around the South Island, in Australia, along the coast of California and in some parts of South Africa.
Every flowering Pohutukawa Tree can vary slightly in colour and the brightness of red and some of the trees can grow to heights of twenty meters. When in full bloom, the tree is a dome shaped picture of colour which highlights any coastline. Their worst enemy is the Brushtail Possum which finds stripping the tree of its leaves a favorite past time but causes danger to the life of the Pohutukawa Tree.
Wandering along the Omata Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand anywhere between November and January, the Pohutukawa Trees are flowering at different intervals and brighten up the shoreline. Tourists stop to take a picture of the trees, as they are not a common sight in most places but are becoming more frequently seen in places listed above.
