This Pitcher Plant, found near a waterfall along the Tablelands Trail in the Tablelands section of Gros Morne National Park, is a carnivorous plant, and although it is very beautiful, it is deadly to its prey. Gros Morne National Park is part of the Viking Trail, or the Trails to the Vikings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along the Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland Labrador, so this means that the park and everything in it is protected from any harm that may come to it.
The Pitcher Plant actually has a method for trapping prey inside. Inside the plant is a pitfall trap of liquid...
... which keeps the small prey inside and allows the plant to kill them. These plants mostly eat flies and small insects; anything that is drawn to the pitfall trap as it smells sweet to the smaller prey. Once they are trapped inside, the sides of the plant are smooth and slippery or grooved in such a way that nothing can climb out. The insect is then drowned and dissolved in the liquid.
The type of soil required for a carnivorous plant to grow must be one that is hostile to other plants as there are not enough nutrients to sustain a plant that obtains its life source from the ground. While some areas of Gros Morne National Park are further inland and are not as battered by wind from the sea, other species can grow in these areas. However, due to its location close to the sea, this park is not an ideal growing place for many species of plants and trees, which is why a Pitcher Plant can survive here.
