This town was declared by UNESCO in 1996 as a World Heritage Site and then later in 2004, the entire valley and landscape known as the Val d'Orcia was added to the list in the Cultural Landscapes.
In the year 1405, an Italian boy was born in a village named Corsignano, who eventually become Pope Plus II and had the small village rebuilt to become the town of Pienza one sees today. Construction began around 1459 when the entire village was built into a Renaissance town which was meant to be used as a retreat from Rome.
