Mainly a coastal, sea fishing bird the pied shag breeds in New Zealand and Australia and can be viewed on the Kaikoura Peninsula in New Zealand. The pied shag is a distinctly colored large black and white seabird that lives with colonies in macrocarpa and pohutakawa trees.
The pied shag loves the Kaikoura Peninsula on the South Island of New Zealand due to the amount of coastal fish such as mullet, flounders and paddle crabs. These incredible birds will dive below the surface to feed to depths of twenty meters.
You can get a good look at the pied shag on the Kaikoura Peninsula where they stand atop massive rocks drying their wings or looking for the next good swimming spot around the inshore waters. These birds rarely venture more than a kilometer or so offshore and they are a social species of birds except when feeding.
