Volcanoes have been around New Zealand throughout much of the geological history and have contributed strongly to the evolution of the surrounding landscape. Three of the regularly active volcanoes of New Zealand are the White Island, Ruapeh and Ngaruhoe which are all part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. This particular picture is of Mount Egmont-Taranki which began forming some 70,000 years ago.
Besides all the volcanoes and their eruptions, New Zealand is home to major geothermal activity where you can get amazing pictures of geysers, hot springs and boiling mud pools.
