Completely black and featuring a distinctive bright orange bill, the Variable Oystercatcher is a wading bird endemic to New Zealand. They range in colours from pied to mottled and black, most of the South Island species are completely black.
The Variable Oystercatcher is found along the coastline of New Zealand on all three islands - from the tip of the North Island to the bottom of Stewart Island. The Oystercatcher is a wading bird endemic to New Zealand and is constantly busy - on the lookout for food along the beaches and mudflats.
