This stop sign is posted at the edge of the railway tracks so that passing motorists and pedestrians know that there are train tracks up ahead and that they will need to stop. In this picture you can see the light fog hovering above the railway tracks that are just lightly covered in a layer of snow. This picture was taken during the winter near Beaver Cove, which is located on Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
It is important to place signs such as this stop sign near railway tracks as not everyone knows where railway tracks are located, and if they are in a rural area they may not have a gate to shut out passing motorists or pedestrians, so a stop sign may be all that stands in the way. These railway tracks are in a quiet rural area, so even though someone may hear a train approaching, the train may not blow its whistle so it is important to always pay attention to signs.
A stop sign is a universal road sign, no matter what country you may be in, a red sign in an octagon shape always means stop. They are often placed at junctions for a reason and it is important to obey them. This one located near Beaver Cove on Vancouver Island may seem like it is in a random place, but it is located at a point where the road crosses the railway tracks.
