The Stephansdom Cathedral in the downtown core of Vienna, Austria was near devastation during World War II but due to its importance to the city, it was reconstructed with the aid of the Regional States. This cathedral was originally built in 1147 and has been the centre of Vienna for centuries, still being one of the most popular sights to see while touring through Vienna, Austria.
The beautiful mosaic tiled roof is clearly visible in this picture along with the incredible architecture of the Gothic tower that stands at approximately 136.4 meters high. These are two of the main attractions of the Stephansdom and for those who are adventurous, you can climb up the stone spiral staircase to the top of the Gothic tower. This is not recommended for everyone as the climb makes you feel very claustrophobic as the stairwell is very narrow and resting stops do not exist. Inside the cathedral, there is a display of many extraordinary art treasures that belonged to princes and emperors dating back to 1754. The stunning beauty of the inside of Stephansdom Cathedral is just as fascinating as the outside, all being surrounded by the unique plaza full of people and shops.
Guided tours are available to see the Stephansdom Cathedral in Vienna, Austria during the week with shorter hours on Sundays.
