A pair of red snowshoes can be seen at the corner of this photo, in sharp contrast with the white of the snow under their feet and all around them. These snow covered banks are the Mistaya River banks, which are piled with snow during the winter season in Alberta, Canada. This gorgeous scenery is found along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. This park is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is a protected area of land.
In the background the snow capped peaks of Mount Sarbach can be seen beyond the tree line, standing at 3155 metres or 10351 feet high. This mountain was named after Peter Sarbach, who was the guide for the first ascend, which took place in 1897. It can be a thrill to climb and explore, but is recommended only for the experienced climber as it is difficult and steep terrain, especially when covered with and ice.
Admiring it from afar while taking a break from snowshoeing is a much safer way to enjoy the scenery of Mistaya Canyon. This area is an enjoyable area in which to hike in the summer, but in the winter it turns into a winter wonderland scene filled with ice and snow and is a popular area for snowshoe exploration. Many tourists come here because it is easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway, but still makes you feel as if you are in the heart of the Alberta wilderness.
