Mt Egmont dominates the Taranki region landscape from every conceivable angle since it is the second highest mountain on the North Island of New Zealand. The Egmont National Park encompasses the mountain and the immediate area surrounding it and has a total area of 33,534 hectares or 335 sq km.
There's a huge array of activites available around the nature of Mt Taranaki especially day hikes and multi day hikes. Short walks take visitors through goblin forests and moss draped mountain rainforests. Once the information centres on the mountain close and day walks come to an end, it is a stunning sight to see the near perfect cone shaped mountain silhouetted against the clear evening sky during sunset and from a distance you can take in the entire scene.
