The original City Hall building was constructed along the Second Empire style of architecture which is also a style known as Napoleon III. Construction began in 1872 and was completed by 1878. Unfortunately a severe fire in 1922 gutted the elegant historic building leaving only the exterior walls. A completely new building was constructed inside the shell of the ruins and a new modern roof of copper was installed to replace the original slate tiles.
Situated across the street (Rue Notre-Dame) from Place Jacques-Cartier in Old Montreal, Canada - the building is bordered on one side by Place Vauquelin and backs onto Champ-de-Mars - a large public park which contains the remains of the city's original fortifications.
Montreal City Hall (Hotel de Ville), a national historic site of Canada, and fountain in Place Vauquelin along Rue Notre-Dame, Old Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
