The historic centre district of Siena contains the Torre del Mangia (the bell tower) and Palazzo Pubblico (the Town Hall) in the Piazza Del Campo and this area is a perfect meeting place for locals and tourists alike.
Many will gather here at any time of the day for a drink, a city event, or just to sit and people watch. This picture was taken when dusk had fallen on the city and the historic buildings are lit up. This city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so it is protected and preserved for every generation to enjoy.
The historic centre district of Siena was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because it is considered to be the perfect example of a medieval city. The city once competed with Florence to be the artistic center of northern Italy and the residents worked really hard to preserve their buildings and heritage. That is very evident in the upkeep of the historic buildings today and when you walk the streets of Siena, you feel as if you have been transported back in time.
The entire city is built around the Piazza del Campo, and it is considered to be one of the best examples of a Medieval square in Europe. It not only hosts events year-round but it is also the principal meeting place. The Torre del Mangia and Plazzo Pubblico are two buildings facing the Piazza del Campo.
