The Catlins is an area on the South Island of New Zealand which is often overlooked by visitors. The area which is located on the south eastern tip of the South Island, roughly in the middle between the city of Dunedin and Invercargill. I can only recommend to plan a few extra days to discover this area even that it is off the beaten tourist track.
There are many beautiful waterfalls to be found which can be found via day walks and hikes. The McLean Falls waterfall is only one of them and should not be missed.
The McLean Falls are only about 15 minutes away from the parking lot and the trail leads along the Tautuku River and a peaceful native forest. Some visitors say that the McLean Falls waterfall is the most spectacular waterfalls within The Catlins. I'm not a big fan of stating the most beautiful, most spectacular or what ever...but fact is that it is a very scenic and beautiful waterfall and a must see when in the area.
