Photo: African Lion Facts

It's a fact - the African Lion spends 90% of its time sleeping not only in captivity but also in the wild.

African Lions live in prides - hunting and feeding irregularly. Females do most of the hunting in the wild, working as a team to flush out and ambush prey. Once the prey is captured, males eat first hence the saying "lions share"!

A male lion weighs in at around 200kg (440 pounds) which is the equivilent to 45 domestic cats. Their mane protects their throat from attack and makes them look larger. Females weigh on average 150kg (330 pounds) which is the equivilent to 33 domestic cats.

Some more facts: The African Lion can sprint at a speed of up to 60km per hour (38 miles per hour) which is as fast as a racehorse, they can jump 10 metres (33 feet) forward and 3 metres (10 feet) high, and their roar can be heard 10 km (6.5 miles) away. Unlike other cats, big cats such as the African Lion roar but cannot purr.
