The wall enclosing the medieval village of Morella in the Castellon province of Spain is two and a half kilometers in length with six gates at strategic places. Morella rises 1072 meters above the lush valley to the south and east, making the village a natural fortress.
Today, one can appreciate the history of Morella in Spain, by visiting the museums which specialize in different eras and subjects on the area. The Gothic archpriestal church of Santa Maria la Mayor should not be missed. This beautiful church has a blue-tiled dome, a doorway dating from the 14th century is adorned with the Apostles, and a marble spiral staircase leads to the choir loft.
The Morella castle, Castell de Morell, is situated on a huge rock, and towers over the village. To enter the castle grounds one passes through the gate on the Plaza de San Francisco. Over the centuries the castle has been almost destroyed and rebuilt, and has been the site of many battles.
