A single locust blends into the colours of the rock formations in the village of Lucchio, Tuscany in Italy and is one that probably resides in this area. A locust is not an uncommon sight in Italy as small numbers of them reside here during the summer. It is when there has been no rainfall for a long period of time, that the locust may group together and become an agricultural threat.
There have been known cases in Italy where swarms of locusts race through crops and vineyards at speeds of up to thirty miles per hour and strip everything in sight. They do not just devour the vineyards but they also attack fields of beans, lettuces, zucchinis, fruit crops and lawns.
The climate in Italy can create the ideal situation for these insects and a chance to easily multiple as hot summers leave perfect conditions for a locust to lay eggs. It only takes two weeks before a juvenile locust is ready to emerge and then the more it rains, the locusts breed rapidly on their journeys. If there is word that a swarm of locusts is heading towards Lucchio, Italy or any other place, there is not much that anyone can do to stop these adult locusts.
Do not be alarmed if you walk by a Locust like this one while traveling throughout Italy, they are of no danger to humans, only their fields. The locust belongs to the grasshopper family, the only difference being is that these particular species are migratory.
