One option is to take the Christchurch Gondola Experience which takes passengers on a 945 metre ride to an elevation of nearly 500 metres (1500 feet) above sea level to the rim of an extinct volcano.
Once at the top visitors are rewarded with 360 degree views of Christchurch backdropped by the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps plus the Lyttelton Harbour.
If windy roads are no problem to you then a drive along the Summit Road provides an interesting trip, which from the summit on a fine and crystal clear day rewards with the same stunning views as the gondola if not better. Take a different route back to the city via the Lyttelton Tunnel which is both the longest and oldest tunnel in New Zealand.
