The Castle Loarre does not sound as romantic as the Spanish Castillo de Loarre, but whatever the language, the history of this Roman fortress begins in the 11th century. The construction of the Castillo de Loarre in Aragon, Spain began around 1020, in the Pyrenees foothills, looking across the plains of Sotonera. In those days this location was the frontier between the Muslim and Christian lands and was a very strategic spot to build a fortress.
Two of the three towers from that era and the Saint Mary de Valverde chapel have survived. A group of Augustinian canons were housed in the Castle Loarre in Aragon, Spain in 1073 by King Sancho, and in 1094 he conquered Huesca.
In 1906 the Castillo de Loarre in Huesca province in Aragon, Spain was designated as a national monument. In 1913 and again in 1970 restorations were carried out in some areas of the castle.
