Pictures Of Otago Region New Zealand

Gallery of Otago pictures which includes scenery, wildlife and towns in the Otago region, situated on the South Island of New Zealand.

The region of Otago is bordered by Canterbury to the north, Southland to the south, and the West Coast to the west.

Otago covers an area of nearly 32,000 square km and the geology of the region is highly variable. From Mountains to lakes, tussock covered drylands to rough hill country and pristine rivers.

The major town centres of Otago are Dunedin, Oamaru, Balclutha, Queenstown, Cromwell, and Alexandra. Central Otago is also known as the fruit basket of New Zealand and is where much of the stone fruit is produced as well as apples and pears. More recently vineyards have appeared in the region and bouquet wineries have developed some awarding winning wines

Approximately 80% of Otago's population is of European descent with the majority hailing from Scottish stock. The rest of the European descent is mostly of English, Irish or Dutch descent. Maori - the indigenous population, comprise approximately 7% of the population mostly from the Ngāi Tahu iwi. ...More information below photos...
