Old Montreal has retained its heritage with winding streets, old market squares and the Notre Dame Basilica completed in 1829.
The Bank of of Montreal, Chateau Ramezay, and the City Hall in Place Jacques Cartier are just some of the reminders of the past. McGill University was established in 1821, and is probably the most prestigious of Canada's Universities.
The city of Montreal is situated on the Island of Montreal where the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa rivers meet at the waterway to the Great Lakes. In the centre of the island is Mont Royal's three peaks (232 metres above sea level) - Westmoun, a mainly English speaking neighbourhood is on one hill, the University of Montreal and two cemeteries dating from 1852 and 1854 on another.
The Parc du Mont-Royal graces the last peak, a 250 acre park enjoyed by the people of Montreal. Opened in 1976 it was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead who also created New York's Central Park.
