Do not think you are seeing things while driving along the road in Oamaru, Otago in New Zealand as this penguin crossing sign is a reality. Slow down considerably as the Blue Penguin is fairly small and if dusk or darkness has taken over, they are particularly hard to see.
The penguin crossing sign is the same colors as most important road signs except that there are two small penguins on the top one, this is not a common sight. The Blue Penguin Colony that resides in Oamaru, Otago is located along the coastline and it is not uncommon for these birds to waddle their way inland.
Growing to a size of about twenty-five centimeters and not weighing more than about a kilogram, these penguins are very important to the wilderness of New Zealand. Usually night is when the penguin colony comes ashore as they spend a majority of the day fishing in the water.
