Pacific White Sided Dolphins

Also known as Lags because of their lengthy scientific name, Pacific White Sided Dolphins inhabit the entire North Pacific Ocean.

Their rather lengthy scientific name is Lagenorynchus obliquidens which was given by Professor Theodore Gill in 1865.

The Pacific White Sided Dolphins are a very social and active dolphin and they often interact with other cetacean species. They will readily approach boats to ride the bow-wake, and are extremely acrobatic and playful.

Pacific White Sided Dolphins are dark gray on the dorsil fin, back of the flippers, and the beak, their belly and chins are white and they have patches of light gray on their sides and a stripe from the eye to the tail.

During whale watching tours in BC you are likely to encounter Pacific White Sided Dolphins playing in the wake of boats, and jumping high into the air.

Be sure to read the story about watching Pacific White Sided Dolphins off the Northern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
