The smallest otter in the world is the Oriental small clawed otter and can be viewed at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand. Related to a meerkat and skunk, the Oriental small clawed otter resides around rivers where they feed on fish, eels and shellfish.
The Oriental small clawed otter loves to spend his time doing acrobatic feats and tobogganing on their stomachs in mud patches. They are extremely strong swimmers and use their tail to sweep from side to side and their webbed feet to swim throughout the rivers.
A full grown Oriental small clawed otter can measure up to approximately 0.9 meters from the tip of their nose to the end of their tail and can weigh up to 5 kilograms. Due to ongoing habitat loss, pollution and hunting, the Oriental small clawed otter is on the near threatened list of animals.
The Auckland Zoo in New Zealand participates in the Australasian captive breeding program for the Oriental small clawed otter and they have a pair that have produced many offspring. The incredibly cute face of the Oriental small clawed otter makes it hard for visitors not to snap a picture or two.
