The first recorded mention of the old village of Sospel in the Alpes Maritimes region of Provence in France was in 1095, although recently prehistoric discoveries of habitation were made in local grottos.
Sospel in Provence is divided in two by the Bevera River which during the summer months is a meandering, slow river. During the spring thaw, however, it can be a raging torrent thundering under the 'vieux port', the old bridge. This toll bridge is double-arched and built solidly of stone.
Both sections of the old village of Sospel, France on each side of the river, have very narrow streets and tall buildings giving them a dark and dingy medieval atmosphere. In the 'old town' on the east side one will find the colourful Place Saint Michel which contains Eglise Saint Michel (St. Michael's Cathedral), two chapels, the town library and the many-arched administrative building painted in orange and ochre tones.
Visitors to Sospel in Provence should go the short distance to Fort St. Roche on the Maginot Line and tour the Musee de la Resistance. This museum depicts the courageous actions of the Resistance movement local people during World War ll.
