Piazza Anfiteatro is one of the main sights in the city, and forms part of the old town, which remained intact as the city expanded and grew around it. The piazza itself is a large oval shape, retaining the original shape of a Roman Ampitheatre, built in 180 BC. On some areas of the walls you can still see the original Roman stone work. In 1830 the piazza got a makeover from architect Lorenzo Nottolini, who cleared all the buildings in the middle of the oval and just left the structures around the outside. Today the buildings that line the outside of the space are mainly shops and cafes and restaurants....

Lucca is situated on the River Serchio, and was founded by the Etruscans in 180 BC. It is the second largest city state after Venice, and in 1805 was taken over by Napoleon, who put his sister in charge. This was frozen in time in the first line of Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' - "Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Bonapartes."
