The Old Opera House, Alte Oper, in the downtown area in the city of Frankfurt in Hessen, Germany was originally opened with a gala showing in 1880. Even the Kaiser Wilhelm I travelled from Berlin for the occasion.
During World War II, the Opera House was badly bombed and it took forty years before the reconstruction was started. The exterior of the Opera House is an Italian High Renaissance style where 2,500 people can enjoy spectacular shows. Today the Opera House is a delightful mix of old and new, with a spectacular lighted fountain in the foreground and is one of the most important opera houses in Europe.
