Contrasting dramatically against the towering modern buildings of downtown Toronto, the Old City Hall building has it's place in history as the third structure to house Toronto's Mayors, councillors and city workers.
In 1989, the Old City Hall building was declared a National Historic Site and is now permanently protected from demolition, which was threatened after construction of the super modern new City Hall situated across the road and during the planning of the nearby Eaton Centre.
Old City Hall was designed by architect EJ Lennox and took 11 years to complete, finally opening in 1899.
