The old Bell tower which rises above the Duomo of Pienza in the Province of Siena, Italy, seems to dwarf the stately cypress trees and stretches into the beautiful blue Tuscan sky. Although the Duomo (Cathedral) is a mixture of Renaissance and Gothic styles, the bell tower has a definite Germanic appearance.
Before Pope Pius II became Pope, he worked in German parishes for many years, so it is likely he influenced Rossellino when he designed the bell tower. In the foreground of the photo, the corner of the Via dell'amore can be seen. Translated to Lovers' Street or Road, it seems to be an appropriate location within earshot of the welcoming bell in the tower of the Duomo of Pienza.
