Water water everywhere, salt water covers 70 per cent of this blue planet of ours, and the earth's coastlines are washed by more than seven seas. The world over, all hues of blues and greens are alive in the ocean currents tossed by storms and soothed by the sun.
The ocean is feared and revered on all sides of the globe. A look through these photos will show you why. At once serene in the evening sun, the ocean can be a raging storm of kicked-up white water the next day.
The jagged cliffs and gentle beaches don't always reflect the mood of the sea. Waves can pound any unassuming stretch of coast while the most rugged crag can overlook the calmest waters. The ocean has a mind of its own.
There is no truer ocean scene than that of a lighthouse standing guard over the waves. These ocean pictures capture the sea in all its moods in all corners of the earth. The Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean are well represented here, as are coastlines in the north and south hemispheres. Remember to stay well out of the spray when photographing the sea, and steer clear of wet rocks where a careless step could send you tumbling over steep cliffs.
