The steep and rugged cliffs stretch along the North Taranaki Bight which is a large bay running north and east from the north coast of Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand. The North Taranaki Bight is not as large or as deep as the South Taranaki Bight but it originated in the development of volcanic activity on the Egmont volcanic chain.
With a couple of exceptions at the river mouths, the coastline of the North Taranaki Bight in New Zealand is backed by cliffs that range anywhere from 60 feet to a several hundred feet high. There are only two towns of any importance along the coastline of the North Taranaki Bight and they are New Plymouth and Waitara.
There are also a number of ancient marine beaches along the North Taranaki Bight coastline of New Zealand where you can find considerable deposits of titaniferous magnetite in black dune and sand beaches. The scenery of the North Taranaki Bight coastline is spectacular and it is an excellent location to capture some outstanding pictures of the North Island of New Zealand.
