New Zealand Scaup: Scientific Name:
Aythya novaeseelandiae
The New Zealand Scaup is a small, black diving bird also known as widgeon or black teal. They can be found around deep lakes and feed on water plants and crustaceans.
When visiting the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand, one can see the Scaup as well as 150 species of animals. The female species of the Scaup may lay as many as 8 eggs in October in a nest by the water. Once the chicks are born the mother Scaup shows them the way to the water's edge for their first lesson of diving and feeding.
The Auckland Zoo is located about 6 kilometers west of Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand and since the 1990s the zoo has tried to make the habitats as natural as possible. The New Zealand Scaup is just one of the many species of birds to be seen when visiting the North Island of NZ.
