New Zealand Penguin: Scientific Name:
Megadyptes antipodes
A yellow-eyed penguin strolls along the coastline on the South Island of New Zealand. This type of penguin is the rarest of all species of penguins.
The yellow-eyed penguin is named for its eyes and yellow feathers around its head. If you are walking along the beach on the South Island of New Zealand and hear some high pitched cries, you will be sure to find the yellow-eyed penguin not far from these cries.
When on vacation in New Zealand and you are fortunate enough to come across this type of penguin, pay special attention not to disrupt any nesting grounds as the yellow-eyed penguin is an endangered species. A recovery plan has been set in motion to save these penguins and an increase in the numbers is starting to show some improvement.
