The Verdon river runs through the Gorges du Verdon in the Alpes de Haute Provence, France, also known as the Grand Canyon du Verdon because it is indeed the largest canyon in Europe. The Verdon river is a tributary of the Durance River, which in turn flows into the Rhone river at Avignon, Provence.
For many centuries the Verdon River has eaten away at the limestone canyon. Looking down into this narrow gorge with its steep cliffs and churning water one can visualize the eons of erosion. In some places the Gorges du Verdon is wide, up to 1600 meters, and then can be just a narrow gorge of 6 meters.
The Grand Canyon du Verdon in the Alpes du Haute in Provence, France stretches for 21 kilometers from pont de Soleils in the east to Lac Ste. Croix in the west. The depth of the canyon can be anywhere from 260 meters to 750 meters.
There are roads, albeit very winding roads, on both sides of the Gorges du Verdon, and this spot is near Point Sublime, where there is a pleasant little hotel. There are half a dozen hotels in the area for those who wish to spend some time exploring this exciting and beautiful Grand Canyon du Verdon in the Alpes de Haute in Provence, France.
