A ride in one of the famous gondolas along the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy is a 'must' on any visitor's list, but ask the gondolier to detour through the narrow, side canals as well.
Gondolas are definitely not a cheap way of travel through the canals - around 62euros for 50 minutes, up to 6 passengers, plus, around 31euros for every 25 minutes after that. However, one could probably forget about a 'singing gondolier' as that really adds to the cost. It is a good idea to make sure the price of the trip is set before the start.
The narrow, side canals can be just as interesting as the Grand Canal of Venice. There are smaller versions of the connecting bridges, and the wonderful facades of the buildings. The boat traffic is less...
... but the canals are narrower, which could be a little nerve-wracking. There are 170 canals and 118 islands in Venice, Italy, so a journey through just a few of these side canals will give visitors some idea of normal life for the local residents.
A visit to Venice, Italy is never complete without at least one gondola ride. If you do not at least try it, you will probably regret it after your vacation has ended.
