The MV Caribou is a passenger and vehicle ferry that takes people back and forth between the islands of Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island in Canada. At the ferry terminal at the Marine Atlantic in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, the ferry is preparing to unload and load passengers for its next trip across the waters.
Back in 1986, the MV Caribou Ferry was put into service and was specially built to handle the ninety-six nautical mile trip. The ferry is five decks high along with two car vehicle decks and weighs over 27,000 tons. The length of the MV Caribou is 179 meters and 25 meters wide and can carry up to 1,200 passengers.
The total traveling time for the MV Caribou to make the Cabot Strait trip from North Sydney to Port aux Basques is about five and a half hours. Some days it might take a little longer while others may be shorter depending on the weather conditions on the water.
The MV Caribou ferry runs on a year round basis and is a beautiful scenic trip across the Atlantic Ocean especially when the icebergs are passing by. A fully loaded camera is recommended as you never know what you may see on your journey.
